These are, therefore, in pursuance of the powers vested in me under section 4 of Ordinance 2 of 1850 and of other powers vested in me on that behalf to command you to detain the said thing tam until he shall have been dealt with according to law, or until further order.

The Rendition Case.
As His Excellency the Viceroy of Canton requires from his Excellency the Governor an immediate explanation, there should be no delay in this matter.
It is difficult at present, under the circumstances, either for Colonel Li Loi or for ourselves to give such explanation and statement, that instructions may at once be sent to the British Consul at Kiung Chow directing him to give full information.
